REVIEW: Mystery, and Magic.” To say I am spellbound is an understatement.

Dear Jude,

A couple of days ago, I began reading your “Fever of Unknown Origin: A True Tale of Medicine, Mystery, and Magic.” To say I am spellbound is an understatement. If this were not such a busy and stressful period in my life (full of concern about dear friends’ illnesses) I would not put your book down.

So this is just a preliminary note of appreciation. I’ve read about a third, much of the time with a pit in my stomach, feeling stunned and distressed about what you endured, and for so long. You are so brave, resilient, and strong. Also so genuine and honest. I’m full of admiration. Your voice as a writer is powerful and trustworthy, and you write with grace.

Congratulations, bravo, and thank you for sharing your experience with such honesty and insight.

I’ll write again when I’ve read more. In the meantime, I must tell you it’s been a great relief to remind myself, repeatedly, that I met you AFTER all this happened and that you’ve more than survived.

What a great accomplishment that is, and this book is as well.
